Un groupe d’élèves des secteurs secondaire français et anglais ouvrent un restaurant à tous les deux jeudis afin de ramasser des fonds pour un voyage d’échange étudiants. Une portion des profits sert à acheter la nourriture cuisinée dans leurs cours de travaux manuels. Les élèves profitent de cette expérience pour apprendre à cuisiner, gérer un restaurant et entretenir une petite entreprise. Les prix sont très abordables et la nourriture est délicieuse!
A group of French and English students in the secondary sector are running a restaurant to raise money for a future student exchange. Some of the profits also pay for the cost of the food used for the work skills classes. More important than the profits themselves, the students are learning about cooking, restaurant management, and running a small business. The group holds a restaurant night every second Thursday. The prices are good and the food is fabulous!!

Announcements : Virtual Keyboarding - Cours virtuel de clavier |

The Virtual Keyboarding program is continuing in its third year. Students from Grade 3 and 4 meet with their piano teacher, Erin Parkes, once per week via video conference. Erin is a music teacher who lives in Ottawa and teaches out of the University of Ottawa Music Department. The Virtual Keyboarding program is a New Paths Project.
Un groupe d’élèves de 3e et 4e années suivent un cours virtuel pour apprendre le piano. Pour la troisième année consécutive, ils rencontrent leur professeur de piano, Erin Parkes, une fois par semaine par le biais de vidéo conférence. Erin est une enseignante de musique qui habite Ottawa et enseigne à partir du département de musique à l’Université d’Ottawa. Le cours virtuel de clavier est un projet du programme Nouveaux sentiers.

Announcements : Le tir à l'arc - Archery Club |

Une fois par semaine, des élèves du 3e cycle au primaire avec des élèves du secondaire participent à des activités de tir à l’arc. Ce projet, subventionné par le programme Nouveaux sentiers, continue depuis l’année dernière. Les élèves qui assistent régulièrement ont fait énormément de progrès depuis le début du programme. Mel Kheng est l’enseignant qui dirige le projet.
Upper elementary and secondary students participate in archery activities once per week. The activity is continuing from a New Paths of Education project. The students who attend regularly have really improved since the start of the program. The teacher running the project is Mel Kheng.

Announcements : Halloween Fun 2006! Joyeuse Halloween! |

Halloween was a big event at Ulluriaq this year.
The Spirit Committee organized a pumpkin hunt in the village. Ten pumpkins were hidden around the community for the students to find. Winners received a full size pumpkin that they could take home and carve for Halloween.
The Spirit Committee also organized a pumpkin carving contest for the Secondary students. All of the students did such a great job that we couldn't even pick one winner. Everyone was a winner!
The Staff Fun Committee organized a "Halloween Fear Factor" event for the staff. It was an exciting staff event that brought everyone together in a grotesque kind of way. We ate some aged seal oil, raw fish eyes, wasabi and other fun things.

Le Comité d’esprit d’école a organisé une chasse aux citrouilles dans le village. Les élèves devaient aller trouver dix citrouilles miniatures qui étaient cachées dans la communauté. Chaque gagnant était récipiendaire d’une grosse citrouille qu’il pouvait apporter à la maison pour l’Halloween.
Les élèves au secondaire ont participé à un concours de sculpture de citrouilles. Les élèves ont fait un travail si formidable que les juges ne pouvaient pas choisir un gagnant....ils ont tous gagné!
De plus, le Comité social a organisé des “Épreuves de peur d’Halloween” pour le personnel de l’école. Le personnel était réuni afin de participer à des activités “écoeurantes” en mangeant du gras de phoque vieilli, des yeux de poisson crus aisni que du wasabi parmi d’autres “goûters soupçonneux”.

Des étudiants de l'école Ulluriaq fouillent le passé ! - Ulluriaq School students dig into the past! |

À l'automne 2006, une intervention de sauvetage archéologique a été entreprise par les étudiants du secondaire français de l'école Ulluriaq de Kangiqsualujjuaq. Ce projet dirigé par l'archéologue et enseignante Amélie Langlais, en collaboration avec l'Institut culturel Avataq, avait pour objectif de récupérer les vestiges d'une structure d'habitation vandalisée quelques mois plus tôt. Cette opération visait également à évaluer le potentiel de ce site archéologique, tout en donnant l'opportunité aux étudiants de mettre en pratique les connaissances acquises lors de leurs cours de science humaine.
L'existence de ce site archéologique situé à quelques kilomètres au nord-est de Kangiqsualujjuaq était, jusqu'à tout récemment, inconnue des chercheurs et des membres de la communauté. Les objets archéologiques pillés au cours de la saison estivale ont pu être en partie récupérés, notamment des outils en pierre taillée, un récipient en stéatite (pierre à savon) et quelques fragments de métal, dont un associé à un marteau. Ces artefacts recueillis laissent croire que la structure semi-souterraine (légèrement creusée) qui constitue le site aurait été occupée depuis quelques milliers d'années, c'est-à-dire aux périodes dorsétienne, thuléenne et historique. Les échantillons de charbon de bois et les ossements d'animaux mis au jour par les étudiants permettront, une fois soumis à des analyses en laboratoire, de dater avec plus de précision les périodes de fréquentation de ce site. Dans un avenir plus rapproché, les archéologues en herbe seront invités à participer au nettoyage, au numérotage et au catalogage des objets issus de la fouille de sauvetage.
Ces travaux archéologiques menés sur le terrain feront l'objet d'un court métrage qui sera présenté en mai 2007 dans le cadre du Festival du film de l'école Ulluriaq.

The French secondary students of Kangiqsualujjuaq’s Ulluriaq School took part in a special archaeological emergency intervention in the fall of 2006. The goal of this project, overseen by archaeologist and teacher, Amélie Langlais, with the collaboration of Avataq Cultural Institute, was to collect the remaining artefacts of a housing structure that was vandalized a few months earlier. This hands-on project gave the students the opportunity to apply what they learned in their Social Studies course as well as provide a chance to evaluate the potential of this archaeological site.
This archaeological site situated a few kilometres north-east of Kangiqsualujjuaq was unknown to researchers and members of the community up until just recently. It was possible to collect almost all archaeological objects that were stored during the summer months, such as sculpted stone tools, a soapstone recipient and several metal fragments which were from a hammer. The artefacts that were collected provided reason to believe that the semi-subterranean dwelling which occupied the site was inhabited several thousand years ago, during the Dorset, Thule and Historic periods. Once the wood charcoal and animal bone samples dug by the students are submitted for analysis, it will be possible to date the time period when this site was occupied with more accuracy. In the near future, our budding archaeologists will be invited to assist in the cleaning, numbering and labeling of the objects they collected.
The students will present their archaeological project that took place on the site in a short film that will be presented during the Ulluriaq School Film Festival in May 2007.
