Snowshoe Race |

The KSB Adult Education department held workshops to train Animators in Kangiqsualujjuaq. Hugo and his students elected to run a Winter Carnival. Amoung the festivities was the snowshoe race. Students in the Secondary sector competed for the title of Snowshoe Race Champion. Congratulations to the top three girls: Minnie Molly, Julianne, Mary. The top three boys were Junior, William and Noah. A big thanks to Hugo and his students for a fun week.

Stained Glass Art |

With the help of their teacher, Kerrin Patterson, students are learning to create beautiful artworks out of stained glass. The students meet twice per week to learn how to work with stained glass. They are making some projects that they can keep and give as gifts and in the future they will sell some of their projects to raise money for more glass supplies. The entire Stained Glass Project is made possible by Brighter Futures funding.

The IPL Progam |

IPL stands for Individual Path of Learning. Students in the IPL program are less interested in working on academics and instead prefer to work with their hands and participate in cultural activities. The project-based learning allows these students to experience success and take pride in their accomplishments. The skills they learn in IPL will prepare the students for life beyond the classroom.
As part of a Stay-in-School initiative, the IPL students are learning small-engine mechanics and woodworking. They have repaired 4-wheelers, outboard motors and snowmobiles. They have constructed tables and qamutiks that are sold to the community.
Students are also learning to make carvings from caribou antlers and soapstone. The carvings are also sold to either the Co-op or people in the community.
Above all else, the IPL students love to get out on the land. They love to camp, hunt, fish and mush dogs. Their teacher, Daniel, is teaching the students all the skills necessary to survive on the land and guide tourists on the land. The IPL Guiding Project is partially funded by Brighter Futures.

Halloween Fun! |

Lots of fun activities for Halloween in 2007...
To kick things off, the Spirit Committee organized a pumpkin hunt in the village for all the primary classes. While the younger students searched the community, the Secondary classes participated in a Scarecrow Contest. The entire afternoon was fun for everyone. There were 10 different winners who found pumpkins and the Secondary 1 English Class won for the best Scarecrow.

There was also a costume parade for the entire school in the gym. One winner was chosen from each class. Most teachers and students came in costume--it was tough to pick the winners.

Teachers also had their share of Halloween fun. The Staff Fun Committee organized a staff Apple Bobbing Contest. Nelson raised the bar high when he dove his whole upper body into the pot of floating apples and retrieved one in only 7 seconds. But when the dust settled, it was Yannick who took the title with a time of 2 seconds.

Welding Course |

The Adult/Continuing Education Department recently offered a welding course to students and non-students. Daniel Pettigrew, the welding instructor, had been in Kangiqsualujjauq in 2006 to teach steel welding. This time, the focus was on aluminum welding. Four students from Ulluriaq School and six adult students successfully completed the two-week course. At the end of the course the students had constructed a very nice aluminum sled that is light and strong. Because his attendance and participation was the best, Sandy was awarded the sled and may have the opportunity to further his education in welding during a visit to Raglan Mine.
