Kangiqsualujjuaq is a remote northern community. There are no public libraries or museums, and there are no music teachers. But, satellite video conference allows us to learn violin from our instructor in Ottawa. Our school is part of a partnership with the CRC and NRC, who supply our broadband connection. In addition, we receive funding through CANARIE as members of Musicgrid.

Every Wednesday at 3:30 we gather in the agora to meet with our music teacher, John, who teaches at Canterbury School in Ottawa. John's students also work with us on holding the violin and tuning the violin--sometimes we play together too. Chris is our teacher in Kangiqsualujjuaq. Before we started to learn violin through video conference, Chris couldn't play violin, but now he is very good because he learns with us. After our lesson with John, Chris practices with us three or four times a week.

We have played in many virtual concerts, including a virtual Christmas concert. Some of the schools that play concerts with us are Canterbury High School, Vincent Massey Public School and Holy Heart of Mary High School.

We also play in real life concerts in our school gym. We are the only members of our community that can play violin--and we are very proud of this!
