The new language unit,
Traveling with Markusie and Matilda
developed by
Ann Grace, Jill Brook, Annelies Brown and myself
is a wonderful opportunity for grade seven classes to explore the world.
Students imagine flying with Markusie and Matilda.
As each country is visited they have their passports stamped.
A lot of research is required throughout this unit
The library, computers and encyclopedias become an important tool in their learning.
For each country we study we have a cooking lesson.
This has definitely added a motivating element to the travel unit.
Computers have been an important tool in our search for recipes.
A total of 14 countries are visited.
The countries consist of Canada, Greenland, Norway, England, France,
Italy, Israel, Egypt, Kenya, China, Japan, Australia, Antarctica and Alaska.

Each student in the class has sent out a travel log to
different contact people around the world.
Each person who receives the log records data about where they live
and also about themselves.
Then they continue its journey by sending it on to a friend or relative.
By March 15 they are sent back to our class.
While the logs are in transit people
send us postcards so we can track their journey.

The cooking and log portion of this project has been made possible
by funding from Gathering Strength.

The students are so excited when they receive postcards.

Minnie is preparing caribou for our stew.

People send
postcards to help us track our
travel logs.

A total of 14 countries are studied in the new travel unit,
Traveling with Matilda and Markusie.

We made caribou stew when studying Greenland.

Our travel logs
went to many places.
