As part of the ecology unit, the grade 6 class studied Arctic Charr. The students traveled upriver on a four day excursion to collect charr eggs and fertilize them. Some of the the fertilized eggs were put into a stream incubator close to town and the remaining eggs were put into an indoor incubator which the students built. The students will document the growth of the eggs which will eventually hatch and be set free.

In this project, we worked with two other schools. From the West, the class from Agnes L. Mathers School in Sandspit on the Queen Charlotte Islands in B.C.; they shared their expertise on pacific salmon and they provided us with a copy of their html dissection of a salmon. From the East, Booth Memorial High students in Newfoundland are the experts in the use of incubators with atlantic salmon eggs; they were doing a similar project to ours and their work inspired us.
