As part of the ecology unit, the grade 6 class followed the migration
paths for six different caribou in Northern Quebec. The caribou wear
a radio collar and are tracked using satellites. The information on
the whereabouts of the caribou is emailed to the students by Quentin
van Ginhoven who is a wildlife biologist. We are very thankful to
Quentin who is always very friendly and extremely helpful!
The telemetry program has been carried out since 1991. During this
time, about 15 caribou from each the George River and Leaf River herds
are tracked. The program is done in association with the Societe de
la faune et des parcs du Quebec, Hydro-Quebec, the Department of National
Defence and the Newfoundland-Labrador Government.
