The Inuit students have been exposed to caribou since a young age. The caribou are a major source of food for the Inuit people of Kangiqsualujjuaq. Even before doing a study of the caribou in school, the students had a lot of knowledge to share.

Here is what the students had to share before the unit:

We use their fur for a camping mattress.

The caribou can smell their food under the snow.

We can make carvings with their antlers.

The fur helps the caribou to float when it swims.

The meat tastes good!

Caribou can run fast.

The caribou have really big antlers in the fall.

Caribou like to eat plants.

Caribou mate in the fall.

Caribou like to travel in groups.

Wolves are predators to the caribou.

The fur is very warm in the winter.

The caribou's fur changes colour in the summer and winter.

We like to hunt caribou.
