The education counselor’s word in French…

"We experimented the activity kit Playing for real in the 5th and 6th grades of the Ajagudak school in Tasiujaq.  During this project, teacher Marie-Ève Roy’s students created a fictitious town where they would all be together as adults. They explored various trades and professions as well as the associated competencies.  The students had the opportunity to work on all the competencies of the Kativik School Board’s French curriculum throughout the project.

These activities also allowed developing various skills such as collaborative work and communication.

The Playing for real game enables to keep a very high motivation level with the students. Despite a project that lasted almost a whole week, we did not note a drop in intensity as far as students’ motivation is concerned. The students did all the parts of the project that we submitted to them graciously and enthusiastically. The Playing for real game enables to break a certain routine in class and to work on the various competencies in a different context."

The competency scales in French

In addition to all the essential competencies and skills related to the guidance approach field, this activity enables us to work on our four competencies of the Kativik School Board’s French curriculum. Throughout the project, the students must read different texts, fill in several forms and presentation cards, share the information found and correctly understand the project’s instructions and constraints.  The difficulty involved in the texts that we worked on is close to level 3 texts. The texts with approximately 1 paragraph were quite accessible for the 5th and 6th grade students.

The written production part requires that the students be correctly coached by the homeroom teacher. The students had to send a message to invite foreign workers over to fill the jobs available in their town. The students need a collective template so as to produce this type of message.
Oral production requires that the students present their town to a company CEO. Despite the nervousness involved in speaking in public, the students brilliantly took up this challenge.

Throughout the project, the students developed and worked on various understanding and production strategies so as to comply with the requirements.
In addition to the competencies worked on in French, “Playing for real” allows easy subject integration. We worked on Social Sciences, Mathematics, Guidance Approach, Arts, and French during this week.
