Playing for real!
on Thursday, May 28, 2009 - 03:53 PM EST
News
The education counselor’s word in French…

"We experimented the activity kit Playing for real in the 5th and 6th grades of the Ajagudak school in Tasiujaq.  During this project, teacher Marie-Ève Roy’s students created a fictitious town where they would all be together as adults. They explored various trades and professions as well as the associated competencies.  The students had the opportunity to work on all the competencies of the Kativik School Board’s French curriculum throughout the project.

These activities also allowed developing various skills such as collaborative work and communication.

The Playing for real game enables to keep a very high motivation level with the students. Despite a project that lasted almost a whole week, we did not note a drop in intensity as far as students’ motivation is concerned. The students did all the parts of the project that we submitted to them graciously and enthusiastically. The Playing for real game enables to break a certain routine in class and to work on the various competencies in a different context."

Quaqtaq students explore the world!
on Wednesday, May 06, 2009 - 03:36 PM EST
News

Letters from Nunavik may travel several kilometers …

It often happens that our students correspond with other children all over the world. It is a good way of honing our skills in French.

In Mrs. Renée Sassine’s class in Quaqtaq, the students achieved two correspondence projects with other classes.  They exchanged with a class in Montreal and with another group in France. They were able to swap letters, photos and greeting cards made by the students.  They even managed to create a video presenting the students, their work, the school and their community. This was a very motivating project for the students!

Guided Writing
on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 - 04:35 PM EST
News

WritingOne of the best processes I have used to encourage writing development is a guided writing method.  If this process is used continually from an early point in a student’s career, they will wean themselves off it by the time they have hit the end of Cycle one secondary, or at least that has been my experience as a teacher!!

The process is simple, and can be used for writing a short story, an opinion piece, or a narrative.  The teacher decides what the writing piece will be about.  For example, if the teacher has been doing work on media, perhaps s/he will want the student to talk about their favorite television show.  The guided process works in three parts.

No need to be a bookworm to go and delve into the online catalogue!
on Monday, February 02, 2009 - 04:04 PM EST
News

catalogue-biblio
Come on teachers, click and see all the titles that greet your eyes, either to borrow from the Resource Centre or in your own school library.

Several titles likely to be of interest to you are up for grabs, in particular educational support materials: carry out a keyword search to see these titles or scroll up the titles on education under the Dewey location symbol between 370 and 379.  You may easily borrow the desired titles from the Resource Centre by e-mailing or faxing your request.

And while you are at it, why not take the opportunity to initiate your students to the method of simple and advanced search in an online catalog? It would be such a nice gift to them: getting to grips with this work tool or learning and mastering the way it works is like giving them an important means of succeeding in their postsecondary studies by opening the door to a whole world of knowledge. This is not a costly gift and it is more than gold for a student to know where and how to look for information as all libraries worldwide are computerized and offer a search tool that operates like the one used by the KSB. Go ahead and you will see that to try it is to adopt it!

Nunavik Youth Hockey Development Program 2008-2009 - Contribution and Leadership from all KSB Schools
on Friday, November 28, 2008 - 03:22 PM EST
News

This year, the NYHDP began much earlier than in the previous years. Student-hockey players from all Nunavik villages have participated in regional tryout sessions in Kuujjuaq since the middle of September. Our objective was to have the teams selected in four categories by the end of November. Students from age 8 to 17, Atoms, Peewees, Bantams and Midgets, have been involved in these tryout sessions. We had planned two tryout sessions for the Atoms and Peewees and one for the Bantam and Midget in order to be ready for hockey tournaments after Christmas which will take place in Lévis, Québec, L'Ancienne-Lorette and Blainville. We achieved our objective, as of November 28, since one team has been selected for each age category.

Welcome to the Eolia Workshop - 2008 Science Tour
on Thursday, October 16, 2008 - 11:47 AM EST
News

Yes there really will be electricity in the air this fall. We will discover how to build a windmill, actually a mini windmill that is capable not only of lighting a small bulb but also of charging batteries.

During this time of climate change, and as Nunavik possesses one of the best potential areas for windmills in the world, students who will be participating in this workshop will explore a wide variety of energy sources particularly wind energy. They will learn how to capture, transform and store this energy into electricity.

During this two day workshop, participants will observe properties linked to wind and energy, through questioning, they will explore, experiment and form conclusions that will allow them to develop and build the ideal propeller for their windmill. Do you prefer to wear the hat of a researcher, engineer, technician, entrepreneur, or maybe you have a hidden talent for design that will make its appearance in the decoration of your completed windmill? During this workshop you will have the opportunity to experience all of these aspects and many more. See more photos Read more...     Printer friendly page

3rd Annual Tundra Trot, The Tradition Continues
on Friday, October 03, 2008 - 10:57 AM EST
News
The third installment of the increasingly successful, Tundra Trot occurred May 15th to May 18th, 2008 in Kuujjuaraapik. There were more full teams - 3 boys and 3 girls - as well as better-trained teams than any other year to date. The total number of participants was similar as last year’s event (69 total, 33 girls and 36 boys). All of the communities, with the exception of Salluit and Tasiujaq, had teams registered for the event.  Unfortunately prolonged fog, winds and poor weather made it impossible for the charters to pick up the Kangiqsujuaq and Inukjuak teams, despite attempts on Thursday and Friday to get them.  This was disappointing to many, considering the consistently strong training and results from the Inukjuak runners, but the races still went on. Orientation Week
on Friday, August 29, 2008 - 12:03 PM EST
News

Resources - EnglishFrom August 12th to the 14th, new KSB teachers gathered in Kuujjuaq for a special event. Each year, the group of newly hired teachers has the opportunity to benefit from a customized training session organized and given by the group of education services pedagogical counsellors.

Over three days, pedagogical counsellors specialized in different subjects presented a series of workshops aimed at providing essential information about the Kativik School Board curriculum. Teachers participated in workshops on the topics of language, math, science, social science, arts and the goal-oriented approach to learning. As well, a series of workshops dedicated to teachers of the Individualized path for learning (IPL) was offered. Finally, representatives from certain departments of our Montreal office came to Kuujjuaq to present information to the teachers.

This week was also an opportunity for teachers to learn a bit about life in Nunavik, to ask questions about the adventure they are embarking on and to connect with each other before leaving Kuujjuaq for their respective village.
